Student Volunteer Program Overview
Student Testimonials
“In the time I spent with Tourism Australia I not only developed hands on, industry relevant skills, but I also saw lots of the theory I had studied at University being played out in every day practise. Admittedly before I worked with TA I did not know much about them, but I have now been shown something that you don’t experience in the classroom, the sheer passion and dedication behind the Australian Tourism Industry. My time with Tourism Australia taught me current business skills which compliment my formal education and helped prepare me for the real world!” – JM (2006 Student, currently Trade Events Coordinator)
“Participation in Tourism Australia’s Student Volunteer Program presents students with the opportunity to understand how marketing at an international level works. The staff at TA are all very approachable and questions are welcomed and encouraged. There are many opportunities to learn new things and put into practice that which one has learnt in the classroom. Being able to work in more than one department means that you are able to develop an appreciation for the way the organization is structured, as well as understand how the different departments interact. Overall, participation in the SVP has been a worthwhile experience.” – MR (2007 Student)
“Tourism Australia’s Student Volunteer Program has provided me with an invaluable experience that was not only very enjoyable, but also complimented my University degree. In my time at TA I gained valuable insight into the organisation’s operations and have benefited greatly from being involved in such events as ATE 2007 held in Brisbane, which proved to be a great eye-opening, practical example of event management within tourism. Tourism Australia is an outstanding team of individuals who are genuinely committed to helping you understand the tourism industry. My time at Tourism Australia, I believe, has provided me with the skills, knowledge and tools to develop and excel in a future career in Tourism. Thank you TA!” – RW (2007 Student)
“Beyond learning how to apply the skills you have learnt at university in a work environment, you gain valuable insight into how the industry operates and just how many opportunities there are for you in the future. Working with such motivated and enthusiastic people makes it a very enjoyable experience. You are treated as a member of the team, and get to do a wide range of different tasks, therefore developing practical skills to help you make the transition from uni to work. Being a student volunteer at Tourism Australia has helped me decide what I want to do next, so now I can base my career decisions on real experience. I would highly recommend this valuable experience to any student interested in the tourism industry.” – ST (2007 Student)
“As a student volunteer at Tourism Australia I gained valuable experience in tourism marketing. It is a great way to get a head start if you wish to pursue a career in tourism. The program is really well structured and each student is given a mentor from their chosen business unit to work with. By joining this program I was invited to attend the major Business Events trade show – Dreamtime - which was a fantastic learning experience and opportunity to engage with corporate buyers from all over the world. I would definitely recommend this program to any tourism students!” – AH (2006 Student, currently Business Events Assistant)
“The Student Volunteer Program was an excellent opportunity for me to gain some insight and practical experience within the tourism industry and also to see the relevance and usefulness of my Tourism Management degree at University. By becoming apart of TA, I was able to learn and understand the structure of the Australian tourism industry and how all aspects are interconnected and contribute to tourism development. Having the opportunity to work in two departments, allowed me to gain a different perspective regarding TA’s operations. The highlight of my experience at TA is definitely the seven days I spent at the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) in Brisbane. By attending ATE I was able to witness first hand the Southern Hemispheres largest tourism trade show and see the outcomes of TA’s preparation and hard work.” – NC (2007 Student)
