August 2009 Highlights

• There were 3.5 million visitor arrivals to Australia during the eight months to August 2009, a decrease of 3 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

• There were 5.5 million visitor arrivals during the year ended 31 August 2009, a decrease of 3 per cent relative to the previous year.

• There were 416,700 visitor arrivals during August 2009, a decrease of 1 per cent relative to the same month of the previous year.

New Zealand

• There were 99,300 visitors from New Zealand during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 700,800, a decrease of 1 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.


Europe

• There were 35,700 visitors from the United Kingdom during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 398,900, a decrease of 4 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

• There were 12,300 visitors from Germany during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 96,400, a decrease of 4 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.


The Americas

• There were 37,900 visitors from the United States of America during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 310,000, a decrease of 1 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

• There were 7,100 visitors from Canada during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 76,300, a decrease of 6 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

 
Southeast Asia

• There were 18,800 visitors from Singapore during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 174,300, an increase of 3 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.
 
• There were 16,600 visitors from Malaysia during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 137,300, an increase of 26 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.
 
• There were 6,500 visitors from Thailand during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 54,900, a decrease of 2 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

• There were 9,400 visitors from India during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 84,700, an increase of 7 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.  
 

Northeast Asia

• There were 31,000 visitors from Japan during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 224,200, a decrease of 28 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

• There were 15,200 visitors from Korea during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 122,600, a decrease of 22 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

• There were 23,500 visitors from China during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 253,600, flat relative to the same period of the previous year.

• There were 11,900 visitors from Hong Kong during August 2009 bringing the total for the eight months to August 2009 to 105,700, an increase of 8 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.
