24 July 2009
Dear Industry Colleague,
In this issue we put the spotlight on Dreamtime 2009, our most timely and exciting opportunity to generate new incentive business for Australia. Our partners Qantas and Business Events Sydney are working with us to make the event a big success. But that success will only come if Australian suppliers and operators invest in attending.
While we have redesigned the event to showcase more of Australia through the new five destination education visit program for incentive buyers – the Business Forum and the two day appointments schedule that is at the heart is still the critical component of Dreamtime.
By exhibiting at Dreamtime 2009 in Sydney, operators will be part of the scheduled appointments program with 100 qualified buyers from 15 markets. Exhibitors will also be able to attend the events program and networking forums in order to firm up relationships and pursue business leads and media opportunities.
Tourism Australia is creating this opportunity to meet with hand-picked buyers from around the world but we also need to have the support of operators. The cost for operators to participate in Dreamtime includes no further stand build costs as this is being delivered by Tourism Australia. |
If your incentive business has been hit by the global financial crisis, we urge you not to be complacent about this important business development opportunity. Our Trade Events website is where you can register by 10 August.
The feedback from Dreamtime 2006 and our most recent trade events is that high quality leads are generated at these events. Through Dreamtime 2006, 17,000 delegates were secured for Australia for corporate meetings and incentives. In addition, Australia was proposed for incentive programs particularly from the US, UK and Europe. Asia confirmed 49 incentive and corporate meetings and the Japanese market confirmed 26 groups. Group size ranged from 20 delegates to 2,200.
We are also offering a range of sponsorship opportunities for those companies or CVBs looking to extend their impact at the event.
Dreamtime and the new incentive marketing campaign launched six weeks ago at IMEX are our two biggest partnership initiatives to help drive more incentive business to Australia.
In addition, we have a range of other programs that are also part of our 09/10 Co-operative Trade Marketing Prospectus. These are designed to bring qualified buyers and sellers together, strengthen our brand marketing and keep Australia on the radar in a highly competitive market place.
We look forward to working very hard with our partners so that more business can be generated for Australia.
Best wishes,
Joyce DiMascio

Business Events Australia and Business Events Sydney host association market seminar
Tourism Australia’s Business Events Australia team, in partnership with Business Events Sydney, recently hosted an industry presentation on the association market at Star City on Thursday 9 July 2009.
The topic, Trends in the Association Market, was addressed by guest speaker Nikki Walker, Vice President Global Association Management and Consulting for MCI, based in the Brussels office. The presentation outlined key trends, challenges and opportunities from within the international association market. |
Twenty Seven industry participants representing hotels, venues, meeting planners, professional conference organisers, convention and exhibition centres, catering and attractions attended the presentation.
Some points from the presentation included:
- Not-for-profit associations are becoming more like commercial companies with corporate-like return on investment (ROI) for community and more value for members
- Audience habits are changing – a customer can pay to attend an association congress or buy a journal but does not have to become a full paying member
- An increase in the importance of brand recognition means that associations need to deliver value to sponsors and provide consistent messaging
- In order to combat the challenge of attracting young members, associations are targeting career development activities/opportunities, inviting young representatives into committees and boards and working with universities to leverage ongoing knowledge growth
- Increased competition from the internet and social networking mediums could negate the use of associations as a key body of knowledge – larger associations are utilising comments and feedbacks on sites to build their content and remain relevant
- Key objectives of a conference include – brand awareness, education, training and revenue generation
- Venue selection should focus on accessibility, support of local associations, market segmentation, service, space requirements, dates, financial flexibility and assistance and logistical support
