Australia on show at Japan’s largest tourism expo

More than 11,700 travel trade and consumers engaged with the Australia stand at the JATA Tourism EXPO, Japan’s largest tourism exhibition, held in Tokyo from 25-27 September.
Visitors had the opportunity to sample Australian wine and organic coffee participate in a ‘Restaurant Australia’ quiz, attend destination seminars and upload customised Aussie Instagram photos.
The Australia stand was supported by Australia’s State Tourism Organisations, and staff on the stand were also assisted by 15 volunteer Australia fans who are members of a local ‘Club Oz’.
This year the event attracted 1,161 tourism related organisations and 173,600 visitors over three days.
About the Japan market
In 2014 Japan was Australia’s sixth largest inbound market for visitor arrivals, fifth largest market for total visitor expenditure and eighth for visitor nights.
Visitor arrivals to Australia from Japan remained stable in the year ending March 2015 at 324,400.
A number of airlines recently announced plans to launch new flights between Japan and Australia and it is anticipated that capacity between the two countries will grow between five and 10 per cent in 2015, followed by stronger growth of 15 to 20 per cent in 2016.
