International visitors to Australia spent a total of $38.8 billion for the year ending September 2016, up 11% over the previous 12 months according to the latest International Visitor Survey from Tourism Research Australia.
Australia’s Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP said growth across the three key north Asian markets of China, Japan and Korea had resulted in a $12.3 billion contribution to Australia's economy in the last year.
John O’Sullivan, Tourism Australia Managing Director, said it was pleasing to see such a strong performance from South Korea, where Tourism Australia has really stepped up its marketing activities in the past year or so.
“In September last year, we partnered with Korean Air to run the biggest campaign Tourism Australia has ever run in the market,” said Mr O’Sullivan. “And we’ve kept up that momentum by hosting K-pop stars 2PM only a few weeks ago, who filmed episodes for a new Korean reality variety show featuring Victoria and Uluru, which will be watched by millions across Asia early in 2017.”
