International Arrivals At Highest Level Since 2005

Australia welcomed 555,800 international visitor arrivals during June 2016, an increase of 13.7 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year, according to the latest statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This is the sixth consecutive month of double-digit growth.

For the year ending June 2016, total international arrivals reached 7.8 million, up 10 percent compared to the same period last year.

“Australian tourism has continued to grow strongly in the month of June, with ongoing double-digit monthly growth in visitor arrivals taking annual growth to 10 per cent for the first time since we set the Tourism 2020 targets in 2009,” said Tourism Australia Managing Director, John O’Sullivan.

Mr O’Sullivan said that the North Asian markets of China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan were growing strongly off the back of flight increases.

“Importantly though is that growth is balanced by the well-performing markets of the United States, Malaysia and India — demonstrating the value of a balanced market portfolio,” he said.

Leisure arrivals continued to drive international arrivals growth with an increase of 13.7 per cent over the 12 month period.
