On 1 July 2004, Tourism Australia was created bringing together the collective skills and knowledge of four separate organisations: the Australian Tourist Commission; See Australia; the Bureau of Tourism Research and Tourism Forecasting Council. Two new business units, Tourism Events Australia and Tourism Research Australia (TRA) were established to focus on industry and market needs.

The establishment of TRA has created new opportunities to expand the wide range of activities the Bureau of Tourism Research was previously responsible for.

TRA will focus on producing and disseminating timely, relevant and accurate research and insights to industry and promoting the important role research plays in underpinning informed decision making.

Products and Services

TRA provides the following products and services to the tourism industry:

  • A website (www.tra.australia.com) that provides a range of information about available research, as well as an online ordering facility for Tourism Research Australia reports.

  • Consultancy services offering survey and questionnaire design and research into niche markets, regional tourism and other significant issues.

  • A statistical enquiries service for industry operators, academics, students and other interested parties.
