INTRODUCTION |
 |
| |
|

|
Dear industry
colleagues,
Welcome to this months edition of our
newsletter. The close of the financial year has had us
all very focussed on winding up the financials for another
year while still delivering the very important projects in
Australia and overseas.
The Board of Tourism
Australia met this month and Business Events was a key item on
the agenda. I was able to give the Board
a
|
|
progress report on the
major priorities for TEA going forward. The Board also
welcomed a delegation from Business Events Council of
Australia (BECA) who presented their latest Federal Government
submission for more funding for Business Events. It was a most
productive and informative meeting.
In Canberra, our Managing Director, Geoff
Buckley and I also met with Federal Minister for Small
Business and Tourism, Fran Bailey and senior officials from
the Department of Industry Tourism and Resources to update
them on our latest programs and initiatives. It was a very
busy day in Canberra – the last days of the Parliamentary
session and the annual TTF Australia Leaders Summit – and
Business Events was squarely on centre-stage.
These important high level meetings are
indicative of the sharp focus that has been brought to Tourism
Australia’s Business Events agenda.
Pippa McCreery and I had the opportunity to
check out the construction of the expanded Melbourne
Convention and Exhibition Centre – what an outstanding
facility and one with premium environmental credentials. This
will be a great asset for Australia and will help to set a new
benchmark for environmentally sustainable infrastructure in
our sector.
How exciting to hear the news that another
important cultural and events landmark, the Sydney Opera
House, has been granted world heritage status by UNESCO. This
recognition helps to keep our important iconic assets in the
hearts and minds of the public and business community. Just
imagine in Australia, it is possible to have your business
event in world-heritage listed facilities like the Sydney
Opera House and Melbourne’s elegant Royal Exhibition Building
and Carlton Gardens.
Also in the world spotlight is APEC 2007 –
a year of meetings and events being hosted around Australia.
The APEC year culminates in Sydney in September when
APEC member nations gather. Tourism Events Australia, Austrade
and Invest Australia are currently finalising a program
designed to leverage this important opportunity. Protocols
around the APEC gatherings are very restrictive due to the
tight security but we are working on establishing a strong
presence for business events. More details will follow next
month.
Again, thank you for generously supporting
the work of the Tourism Events Australia team.
Best Wishes,
Joyce DiMascio Head of Tourism Events
Australia

AUSTRALIA'S NEWEST ICON TAKES SHAPE
|
 |
| |
|
One year after construction began,
Australia’s largest combined exhibition and convention centre
is taking shape on the banks of Melbourne’s Yarra
River.
The new centre is part of an A$1 billion
development which includes a Hilton hotel, a lifestyle retail
precinct and 60,000 square metres of shopping.
Opening
for business in 2009, the new centre is being developed
through a partnership between the Victorian State Government
and Plenary Group. The Government is contributing $370 million
toward
construction.
Melbourne’s Exhibition and Convention Centre Chief
Executive Leigh Harry says it’s exciting to see the centre
take shape.
“This is going to be a phenomenal
building. Not only will it be visually striking, but
it’s designed to achieve a Six Green Star environmental
rating. It will be one of the greenest convention centres in
the world, and it’s located in the centre of Melbourne
city.
|
 |
You can stand at the 18
metre glass façade looking out to the Yarra River and feel
like you could literally touch the city – you’re that
close.”
Already ten major
international conventions are booked for the new centre,
bringing more than 19,000 |
delegates to Melbourne with an economic impact to the
state of more than $100 million.
