TOURISM EVENTS AUSTRALIA
MANAGER APPOINTED |

Joyce DiMascio has been appointed as the head of Tourism
Australia’s ‘Tourism Events Australia’ unit.
Joyce, who
has more than 20 years experience in the tourism industry and
is currently the National Tourism and Major Events Manager for
the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) Australia, will join
Tourism Australia next month as Tourism Events Australia
Manager.
In her current role at TTF Australia, Joyce
has been responsible for leading the organisation’s tourism
business, including the major and business events policy
development advocacy. Prior to this Joyce was Director of
Marketing Communications for Tourism New South Wales,
responsible for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games program. She has
also provided marketing communications consultancy services to
the Australian Tourist Commission, Australian Tourism Export
Council and Orient-Express Hotels Australia, and was formerly
Public Affairs Manager for East-West Airlines.

The ninth Team Australia Business Events Educational
(TABEE), held in Shanghai, China, has been hailed a
success. The event attracted 52 sellers - the
largest ever - from 40 Australian tourism businesses and 12
Team Australia members (Convention and Visitors
Bureaux).
They met qualified travel agents, incentive
and meeting planners and corporate end users from 11 Asian
countries. The program included one-on-one appointments, team
building activities and networking opportunities. TABEE
provides an important opportunity for Australian business
event products to meet and do business with influential buyers
from the Asian region. |

TO IMEX 2007 – 20 DAYS!
Tourism Australia and 11 Australian industry partners will
be exhibiting at IMEX from 17-19 April 2007. This year’s
tantalising theme is a ‘Taste of Australia’, giving attendees
the chance to experience Australia’s unique and dynamic
cuisine from 4.30pm-5.30pm on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18
April.
IMEX is a worldwide exhibition that brings
together planners and suppliers from the conference and
corporate events industry. It is held in Germany, the world’s
third largest market for conferences and incentives. IMEX
provides the opportunity for Australian sellers to meet
influential buyers looking for innovative incentive
destinations and experiences.

MARKETING WINS MEETING INDUSTRY ACCOLADE |

Brisbane Marketing has been
named Queensland’s best Convention Bureau/Tourist Organisation
at the 2006 Meetings and Events (MEA) Industry Awards
(Queensland).
The award recognises the
outstanding results achieved by the Brisbane Marketing
Convention Bureau throughout 2005 and 2006.
Mr Paul Lewin, Brisbane
Marketing Director of Business Development and Association of
Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB) Vice President, said
the award win reflected the Bureau’s commitment to building
Brisbane’s meeting and events industry and generating business
and economic benefits for the city.
During the 2005-06
award qualifying period, the Bureau exceeded all of its
performance targets and won 23 bids for future convention and
business events that will deliver more than 12,000 business
visitors to Brisbane worth more than $22 million.

500 DAYS TO GO UNTIL SYDNEY OPENS ITS DOORS TO INTERNATIONAL

With less than 500 days to go until the start
of World Youth Day in Sydney 2008 (WYD08), organisers have
announced a package of measures aimed at attracting overseas
pilgrims including:
- A standard three-month visa, free of Government charges,
for registered pilgrims from overseas
- A new DVD aimed at international pilgrims, with Sydney
and its young people in starring roles, and
- Online registration for pilgrim groups
The initiatives aim to allow pilgrims to
maximise their stay in Australian and enjoy the wide range of
destinations and experiences.
World Youth Day is expected to attract 125,000
overseas pilgrims to Sydney for six days of religious and
cultural
events. Registrations by individuals will open mid year.

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games has been awarded the
National Sports Tourism Award at the recent
Australian Sport Awards.
The Awards recognise achievement across all sporting
categories. The Commonwealth Games won its category
against a strong field of national events.
Tourism Australia was involved in both the international
and domestic tourism program in the lead up to and during the
Games, which attracted over 60, 000 international visitors to
Melbourne .
Melbourne has hosted two major events concurrently this
month - the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (16-25
March) and FINA World Swimming Championships (17 March – 1
