INTRODUCTION |
 |
| |
|
Last week, the world's international
meetings, conventions and congress leaders gathered in
Thailand for the annual meeting of the International Congress
and Conference Association (ICCA). As a first time attendee I
was all ‘ears and eyes’ - trying to learn about what our
competitor destinations are up to and about the major issues
impacting on our sector.
A core theme running through the
forum was corporate social responsibility (CSR) - with a
strong emphasis on environment and community. Around 50
nations were represented covering a cross-section of the
meetings industry. |
|
 |
|
ICCA President, Leigh Harry gave a
compelling speech urging our industry to "take our share of
responsibility for the environment now". It set the tone for
the event as we heard from destinations, venues and other
advocates about initiatives that were making CSR a core part
of the business rather than an add-on.
In recent issues of this e-newsletter, I
have written about the need for Australia to get on the
front-foot and actively embrace the opportunity to
position Australia as a responsible and sustainable Business
Events destination. Tourism Australia will be continuing to
focus on this as a matter of priority.
To help us do this - I invite those who
have not responded to our survey
to do so. The insights gathered will provide a national
snapshot on the ‘greenness’ of our sector. We have had some
responses however not nearly enough – I ask you to please take
a few moments to send through your feedback.
In other news, we have an exciting
program of corporate and agent famils and trade events coming
up. EIBTM in Barcelona at the end of this month and TABEE in
Macao early next year. For the second year running Tourism
Australia will have a presence at AIME 2008 including a booth
on the floor.
We also have an important visit by our new
Chairman, Rick Allert, to London later this month where he
will meet with our Business Events partners from the UK and
Europe. This is another vivid example of how Business Events
is on centre-stage within Tourism Australia.
We have some important programs coming up
as we sharpen the focus on the challenges and
opportunities that Australia faces in a very competitive
marketplace.
Best wishes,
Joyce
