| INTRODUCTION |

|
Welcome to our first edition for 2008. We are off to a flying start with an outstanding program of initiatives for the first quarter of the calendar year.
Over recent months, we’ve been working with industry to develop a new business events brand for Australia which will underpin our trade marketing. It captures the essence of Australia as a business events destination and will anchor all marketing communications in the future.
|
This is not a ‘campaign’ but a framework for the visual language and core messages about Australia. It will help to integrate our programs ensuring that there is consistency and a strong and compelling message behind all that we do.
The brand is distinct from Tourism Australia’s leisure brand – something that has been welcomed and endorsed by the industry – many of whom have worked with us on the project. More information will be distributed at AIME08 in Melbourne where Tourism Australia will have a renewed and invigorated presence through the Business Events Australia booth (#1609). We look forward to seeing you at the show.
The final preparations for the 10th anniversary of TABEE to be held at the Ventian Macau Resort Hotel are also underway. This year we have added a VIP program and I am delighted to say that we have had tremendous support from Australia and Asia. In addition, we will have a strong media program of both Australian and Asian business events writers. This attention is most fitting for an event that has helped pave the way for Australia’s strong performance in Asia.
Also in this issue, we have a link to our latest fact sheet with passenger data from the ABS including analysis from our Strategy and Insights team at Tourism Australia. The data for December 07 shows that the business events sector has enjoyed strong growth with annual growth in the visits for conventions reaching 10 per cent. Not surprsining a lot of this growth has come from Asia.
I look forward to seeing many of you in Melbourne – please drop by and say hello at our booth at AIME08.
Best wishes,
Joyce DiMascio

BUSINESS EVENTS AUSTRALIA BRAND ROLL-OUT AT AIME |
 |
| |
 |
|
As part of Tourism Australia’s strengthened commitment to promoting Australia as a world-class Business Events destination, we are rolling out our new Business Events Australia brand at AIME 2008. This brand will underpin all marketing to position Australia as a business events destination.
This brand has been developed in close consultation with the industry including; |
Association of Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB), Conventions Australia and Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) and other industry advisors. We look forward to rolling this out to the industry at 5pm on Tuesday 19 February – booth 1609. |
AIME 2008 is the ideal forum to highlight Australia’s credentials amongst increasingly tough international competition - many of which will be exhibiting.
Complimentary coffee will be available daily on the booth and we encourage the industry to come and learn about the new Business Events Australia brand and forthcoming trade marketing initiatives.
AIME will be held on Tuesday February 19 and Wednesday February 20 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

TEAM AUSTRALIA BUSINESS EVENTS EDUCATIONAL (TABEE) 2008 |
 |
| |
This year Team Australia celebrates 10 years of marketing Australia in Asia.
Tourism Australia and 12 Australian Convention and Visitors Bureaux along with 38 Australian Business Events sellers will take part in the three-day program. The buyers represent 11 Asian countries and include 50 corporate end users and 50 incentive agents. There will also be 20 international and Australian media attending TABEE 2008.
|
For the first time this year, TABEE will include a VIP program for senior representatives of the Australian tourism industry as well as local Asian representatives who have held successful meetings in Australia.
TABEE would not be celebrating 10 years of in-market activity without the continued support of the tourism sector and our Tourism Australia team in Asia.
|
 |
There are particular individuals who require acknowledgement for their significant role in the growth and development of this event.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge their contribution including our very own team – Johnny Nee, Tourism Australia’s Regional General Manager North Asia and his team Vean Chan and Rachel Yu.
We would like to thank our sponsors of TABEE 2008:
Hedgehog Events – Official event theming partner for lunches and the gala dinner
Sabre Corporate Development – Official sponsor of team building activities
Greater Union Cinemas – Pillow gift sponsor for buyers and media delegates
Qantas – Airline partner
For more information on TABEE, please read the TABEE Fact Sheet. |

BUSINESS EVENTS VISITATION - 2007 RESULTS |
 |
| |
Last year, we shared details of our work with Tourism Research Australia to develop solid benchmark data on the meetings sector by adding new questions to the International Visitors Survey and the National Visitors Survey. This collection started in January 2008 and we will start reporting on this from June 2008.
Additionally, last year we promised to deliver regular updates on business event statistics. Here is the second of these reports. For the year ending 31 December 2007, there were 188,000 convention or conference arrivals to Australia - an increase of 10 per cent year-on-year. For more details on the year end results, refer to the Business Event Statistics Fact Sheet.

TOURISM AUSTRALIA GREEN INITIATIVES |
 |
| |
Tourism Australia is part of the Tourism and Climate Change Taskforce. This taskforce was established by the Tourism Ministers Council to look into issues including aviation, carbon footprints and communications with the aim of taking a holistic approach to climate change.
As part of the new brand book, a series of Fact Sheets will be provided, one of which is a Green Checklist. The Fact Sheets are designed to meet the changing needs of the business events sector.
As part Tourism Australia’s overall Green initiatives, we recently joined forces with US publishing powerhouse Conde Nast in New York with a special ‘Planet Oz’ event which profiled Australia’s credentials as one of the world’s top eco-tourism destinations.
