Market trends
- Arrivals from India for the year ended November 2024 were at a record 434k; which were up 12 per cent over 2023. Indian travellers spent A$2.3 bn on their Australia trips for the year ended September 2024, an increase of eight per cent over YE September 2023.
- India maintained its number five ranking for arrivals and spend and continues to be one of the fastest growing and promising markets for Australia.
- India is today the fastest growing large and emerging economy in the world and expected to be the world’s third-largest economy by 2030. There’s increased appetite to travel amongst the young Indians and factors like generational shift, attitudinal shift and events globetrotting will continue to drive outbound travel, which, as per CAPA and McKinsey is expected to reach 50 million by 2030 and 90 million by 2040 respectively.
- On the distribution front, fragmentation is on the rise and the traditional 80:20 rule doesn’t apply. There’s a gradual shift from traditional agents to online travel agents and the market is seeing more direct bookings than through agents.
